Step into Spring 2022 with the Quaker in Europe course

A new version of the Quaker in Europe course is set to start in March 2022, bringing together newcomers to the Quaker way from across Europe in a supportive environment to explore Quaker themes online.

The Quaker in Europe course is an exploration, in English, of the Quaker way from a European-wide perspective. It is an opportunity for people of different levels of experience of the Quaker way from across Europe to study, explore and reflect on key themes of Quakerism while in a supportive and friendly environment.

Participants are likely to be newcomers to the Quaker way from communities where there might not be a full programme of materials and resources readily available, plus people who are interested in developing the course in a language other than English and want to experience the course as a participant and more experienced Quakers who want to support those who are newer in their Quaker journey.

Modules of the course include Quaker history, worship, process, testimony and experience. There is a forum for sharing learning, experience and reflections and live sessions on Wednesdays at 19:00-20:00 CET on Zoom.

Access to the course opens from 7 March 2022 and it is facilitated by Jasmine Piercy (Central European Gathering) and Jeannette Law (based in Italy).

“The Quaker in Europe course, in my experience, was simply life-giving,” explains Jeannette, who first encountered the course as a participant last year. “Our discussions included eye-opening insights about Quaker history and testimonies, as well as numerous references to formative readings and online resources. More importantly, the in-person sessions over six weeks provided an invaluable way to connect with other Friends over meaningful spiritual topics, with the freedom to pose the sometimes thornier questions of faith and practice in an atmosphere of kindness and inclusion.” Jeannette will draw on her experience as a participant to enrich how she facilitates. “Newcomers and more experienced members alike are welcome to join these rich reflections on what it means to be a Friend in the global Quaker community,” she adds.

The course price is “pay as led” but an entry of 0 is equally welcome in the amount field.

Jez Smith, Assistant Secretary of FWCC EMES, says that the course has been a mainstay of Quaker experience in the region for over a decade: “Earlier versions of the Quaker in Europe course have been translated into 10 languages. The new version has been translated and adapted in French by Quakers in France and ran last year with over 40 participants. The English version ran last summer with more than 20 participants in 10 countries around Europe. And we continue to see the earlier version of the course run in Czech and Polish thanks to the dedicated effort of Quakers from across the Section.”
