EMES Appoints a New Assistant Secretary

We are pleased to announce that Jez Smith (pictured) will be joining the EMES staff team as Assistant Secretary on 20th April 2020.

Jez is no stranger to EMES, having been a member of the executive committee from 2011 to 2013 and before that a Britain Yearly Meeting representative from 2008 to 2010. Jez moved to Geneva in 2014 with his son and his partner Laurel, who works for the Quaker United Nations Office as the Representative for Human Rights and Refugees. Since moving to Geneva, Jez has been a stay-at-home Dad, while also creating art, learning French, volunteering and trail running. Jez has worked for other Quaker organisations such as Britain Yearly Meeting, The Friend and Quaker Social Action. Jez has previously served on the Quaker Council for European Affairs executive committee and the Swarthmore Lecture committee and contributed to the editing of Encounters with mental distress, published in 2015 by Britain Yearly Meeting.

Following Marisa Johnson’s retirement on 30 April 2020, the new staff team from 1st May 2020 will be Jez as Assistant Secretary and, subject to the approval of the EMES Annual Meeting, Michael Eccles as Executive Secretary.
