2020 Brummana High School bursary appeal

Almost 150 years ago Swiss Friend Theophilius Waldmeier established a Quaker school in the hills above Beirut. Today, Brummana High School is educating 1,250 students at any one time. Around 90% of the students are Lebanese and in total almost children from almost 50 nationalities are studying a the school.

The Quaker International Educational Trust (QuIET), a charity, is responsible for both the students’ education and supporting the local governors of the school and the Principal David Gray and his team.

David Gray says: “In a country divided by sectarian differences, Brummana, overlooking Beirut from the heights of Mount Lebanon, has provided an education with its emphasis on individuality, respect for others, tolerance and peaceful resolution, throughout times of difference and conflict in the country.”

Around 50% of students receive financial support to attend the school and all parents who can afford to do so are encouraged to make donations to support families in need. But, with unemployment at around 40% in Lebanon and problems compounded by the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic, QuIET is expecting a shortfall of fees being paid this year, which will make it very difficult or impossible to run the school effectively.

Therefore, an appeal has been launched for support and the appeal leaflet is available by this link: Brummana appeal 2020-2021.pdf

It is also possible to make a donation by their JustGiving donation page.
